winter warmth fund

Rory has joined forces with a host of well-known Cumbrians in support of the second year of Cumbria Community Foundation’s Winter Warmth Fund, which collects unwanted Winter Fuel Payments in order to help older people stay warm this winter.

Rory said: “I am delighted to be supporting Cumbria Community Foundation’s Winter Warmth Appeal this year. It is a real testament to the strong sense of community and compassion that exists in Cumbria – that people are willing to donate their payments to those in more difficult circumstances. If anyone feels that they can contribute, please, please do: last year we saw the tragic deaths of elderly people unable to afford heating in their homes. This is an appalling situation that could have been avoided, and one we should not have to witness. The Winter Warmth Appeal reminds us all how extremely tough this time of year can be. Please do support the Appeal if you can, and help those in need to stay warm this Winter.”

The Winter Warmth Fund came to life last year when a few leading Cumbrians decided they wanted to donate their Winter Fuel Payment to support others who were less fortunate than themselves. Everyone over the age of 60 is automatically entitled to the Government’s Winter Fuel Payment and for many people this is vital. While no-one wants to see the end of this universal benefit, some people can manage without it and are putting it to good use. Donations of Winter Fuel Payments are redistributed to elderly people in need through a grants programme.

Andy Beeforth, Director of Cumbria Community Foundation, said: “We live in a beautiful rural county and much of the attraction is the appearance of the traditionally built houses in the rolling countryside. But these rural idylls are hiding a number of older people who are struggling to keep warm. I can’t bear the idea that people are choosing between eating and heating and hope our community will embrace the idea of our special fund and share the warmth this winter.”
