RORY JOINS NATIONAL BUS CELEBRATION

Local MP Rory Stewart is this week supporting the national Catch the Bus Week campaign. The scheme, which promotes the sustainable benefits of taking the bus, has been praised by Rory, who has been spotted with the infamous green foam hand labelled ‘Catch the Bus Week’. Rory is a firm supporter of local bus services; he has over the years supported local community bus schemes, lobbied government for an increase in the community transport fund, and is currently organising a rural transport event in association with the Community Transport Forum, looking specifically at bus user issues in Penrith and The Border.

Greener Journeys, the organisation behind the scheme, seeks to encourage people to make more sustainable travel choices. At the core of Catch the Bus Week is an aim is to reduce CO2 emissions from transport by encouraging people to switch some of their car journeys to bus or coach instead. This is part of an international effort to reduce CO2 emissions to mitigate the effects of global warming- something Rory strongly backs and is actively working to achieve.

Speaking today he said: “Catch the Bus Week is a great initiative that promotes a small change to make a big difference. CO2 emissions pose a very real threat and it is vital schemes like this are supported to alleviate the threat. Not only does catching the bus have large environmental benefits, but socially buses are a great way of connecting communities and can save individuals a lot of money. I hope this scheme continues its great work and builds on what it has already achieved, and I am proud to support it.”
