Rory champions Dairy Farmers in Westminster

Rory Stewart MP for Penrith and the Border chaired a meeting in Westminster for members of the NW Dairy Board, and welcomed other northern MPs to a discussion that focused on the needs of dairy farmers in the north-west. The meeting, hosted by Rory Stewart in the House of Commons and attended by various MPs from the north-west region - including Tim Farron MP - dealt with, amongst other issues, 2013 CAP reform, import and export issues in the dairy sector, the EU dairy package, and the attempts by government to reduce the burden of red tape on farming. The meeting came less than one week after Rory hosted Secretary of State Caroline Spelman and Minister for Agriculture and Food Jim Paice. His proactive approach in inviting top level officials from Defra has been widely applauded in the Cumbria farming community. Rory Stewart said: “Dairy farmers are having a rough time; there‘s no question about that. Government has got to think harder and start coming up with solutions. Now is not the time to be complacent. We need to think carefully about ways in which we can reduce the constraints of contracts, how we can ensure any ombudsman has teeth, and be realistic about how we can penetrate the European export market and claw back our share of the import market. The meeting today has helped I and my colleagues to continue to highlight this agenda at the highest levels. We won‘t stop listening to dairy farmers.”
